Royal Oak Hills' Free Ride Around the Federal Highway Work Zone This November

October 22, 2026

FDOT is rebuilding Federal Highway and has taken away travel lanes between Camino Real and Mizner Boulevard. For Royal Oak Hills, that work mostly gets in the way of weekday daytime trips. The neighborhood's own street meets the south end of the work zone. The posted lane reductions run during weekday business hours. Of November's three downtown events, two start at or after the hour those reductions lifted in October and the third falls on a Saturday, and the city's free on-demand shuttle covers the neighborhood.

The first of those three nights, the Night Market on Thursday, November 5, is one week out. Here is how the construction, the clock and the shuttle zone line up for each one.

Camino Real Is Where the Work Zone Begins

Royal Oak Hills covers about 120 acres of single-family streets. It runs from Palmetto Park Road on the north to Camino Real on the south, and from SW Ninth Avenue east to about SW Sixth Avenue, roughly a mile west of downtown, according to Boca Raton Today's neighborhood guide. So the neighborhood has two east-west roads into downtown, and the southern one leads straight to the start of the Federal Highway project.

The Florida Department of Transportation's $6.3 million project covers 1.3 miles of U.S. 1 from Camino Real to NE Eighth Street and Mizner Boulevard. TAPinto Boca Raton reported that the 11-foot outside travel lane between Camino Real and Mizner Boulevard/SE Fifth Street will be removed. That space, plus room gained by narrowing the median, becomes 7-foot separated bike lanes and 11-foot sidewalks. The Camino Real intersection gets the most change of any single point in the project. It gets a second northbound left-turn lane, and its traffic signals are being replaced with mast arms.

That intersection work has already reached the neighborhood's doorstep. FDOT's Palm Beach County traffic report for October 16 through 23 listed intermittent closures of one northbound and one southbound lane at U.S. 1 and Camino Real from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., October 12 through 16, for signal work. The same report said southbound traffic had moved into its final two-left-lane pattern starting October 12.

Some of the changes will help the walk between downtown venues once they are built. The plan adds a signalized pedestrian crossing south of Plaza Real with more lighting, along with upgraded curb ramps and pedestrian signals. FDOT has said homes and businesses stay accessible throughout and the speed limit stays at 35 mph. Completion is expected in fall 2027.

The Lane Reductions Run on Business Hours

For anyone heading downtown after dark, the hours matter more than the location. In its October 16 report, FDOT reduced both directions of U.S. 1 between Camino Real and SE Fifth Street/SE Mizner Boulevard to one lane from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., running through October 23. The first big closure in late August followed a different pattern. Starting at 9 a.m. on August 24, the inside lanes between SE Eighth and SE Fifth Streets closed around the clock for three weeks.

So the schedule changes from week to week, and FDOT reissues it in a weekly report. The most recent one points to a weekday, daytime work zone. When November arrives, check FL511 or FDOT District 4's lane closure updates on the day itself, not this October pattern. Even so, compare the October window with November's calendar:

Event Date and time Where Next to October's 9-to-4 window BocaConnect hours that day
Night Market Thursday, Nov. 5, 6–9 p.m. Sanborn Square, 72 N. Federal Hwy. Starts two hours after 7 a.m.–11 p.m.
Red, White & Boca Wednesday, Nov. 11, 4–7 p.m. Mizner Park Amphitheater, 590 Plaza Real Starts as it ends 7 a.m.–11 p.m.
Savor Boca Saturday, Nov. 14, 1–4:30 p.m. Check-in at the Mizner Park median Weekend 9 a.m.–2 a.m.

The Free Zone Already Includes the Neighborhood

BocaConnect is the city's on-demand, all-electric shuttle. Circuit Transit Inc. runs it, and riders book through the Ride Circuit app. The Boca Post reported in July that rides starting and ending inside the base "red" service area are free. That area runs:

  • south of Glades Road
  • east of I-95
  • north of the Hillsboro Canal
  • west of NE 5th Way, SE 5th Avenue and Royal Palm Way

Royal Oak Hills fits inside all four lines. Its western edge at SW Ninth Avenue sits east of I-95, with the Palmetto Park Road exit about 1.3 miles away by road. The city says wait times after a request are 10 minutes or less. The service started in June 2024 as a first-mile, last-mile option built around downtown and the Brightline station. The paid "blue/green" zone south of the Boca Raton Inlet was a summer addition that ran July 1 through September 30. Trips from the neighborhood to downtown never touch it.

Put the shuttle together with the work schedule and the routes look like this. If you drive, Camino Real takes you straight to the most reworked intersection in the project. Palmetto Park Road crosses Federal Highway north of the lane-reduction stretch's southern end. And on any of the three November nights, you can leave the car at home and ride free.

Thursday, November 5: The Night Market

The city's Night Market series came back to Sanborn Square on October 1. It runs monthly through the fall, with vendors selling baked goods and sweets, local artists and makers, and live music. The November market runs from 6 to 9 p.m.

The city's own Night Market announcement promotes free BocaConnect rides to and from the market, so this is the night the shuttle is most clearly meant for. The shuttle runs until 11 p.m. on Thursdays, which leaves two hours after the last vendor closes to get home. Sanborn Square, at 72 N. Federal Highway, sits in the same corridor FDOT is rebuilding, and by 6 p.m. the October daytime restrictions had already lifted for the day.

Wednesday, November 11: Red, White & Boca

The city's Veterans Day celebration is free, needs no registration, and runs from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Mizner Park Amphitheater, 590 Plaza Real. The city's event schedule is set to the minute:

  1. 4:00 p.m. The Veterans Marketplace, classic car show and food vendors open
  2. 4:45 p.m. Presentation of Colors and the National Anthem
  3. 5:10 p.m. The Coastman Chorus performs
  4. 5:45 p.m. Belladiva performs
  5. 6:45 p.m. Car show awards on the east lawn, including Best of Show and Best Veteran-Owned

This is the one November event that begins right at the edge of the daytime window from October's report. Gates open at 4:00, the same minute those lane reductions ended. If you want to see the cars before the awards, expect afternoon traffic on the way in. Mizner Park's visitor FAQ lists free parking in Garages A, B, C and D. Before booking a shuttle ride to the amphitheater, open the zone map in the Ride Circuit app and confirm your drop-off point is inside the free red area.

Saturday, November 14: Savor Boca

The Rotary Club of Boca Raton's Savor Boca Experience checks in at 1 p.m. on the Mizner Park median and runs until 4:30 p.m. It is a ticketed tasting with 16 participating restaurants. The lineup includes:

  • Corvina Seafood Grill
  • Serena Pastificio
  • Kapow Noodle Bar
  • Ramen Lab Eatery
  • Belladuke's
  • Talkin' Tacos
  • La Mesa Café Bistro
  • Crema Gourmet Espresso Bar
  • Savia
  • AJ's Italian Deli
  • Just Baked
  • Pure Green
  • Poke Jay
  • Spirits and Spice
  • American Social Bar & Kitchen
  • Pzza &

Of the three events, this one is best suited to leaving the car at home. A tasting route is best on foot. BocaConnect starts at 9 a.m. on Saturdays and runs until 2 a.m., so it covers the trip home whether you leave at 4:30 or stay downtown for dinner.

One More Address Inside the Work Zone

Construction will still be on the corridor when the Night Market returns on December 10 with a holiday theme. By then, one new name may have opened on the stretch. Fletchers, at 133 SE Mizner Blvd., is planned as a public restaurant and lounge with a private members' area, according to The Coastal Star. It has announced a fall opening but no specific date. Mizner Boulevard at SE Fifth Street is where the project's lane removal ends.

Federal Highway will be under construction for another year, but daily life in Royal Oak Hills carries on, and so does the market.
